Fayetteville Sports Club announces 2025 Hall of Fame class

The Fayetteville Sports Club is honored to announce the 2025 class of its Hall of Fame.

This year’s induction ceremony will be held on April 17 at 6 p.m. at the Tony Rand Student Center on the campus of Fayetteville Technical Community College.

Tickets are $65 and can be purchased by contacting Ashley Petroski at ashley@npfp.com or 910-323-9195.

Advance sales will end on April 10. Following are this year’s class members. Head and shoulders photos of each inductee will follow in a separate email.

Saffos enjoyed a long and successful career as a head football coach that saw him make two stops in Fayetteville, once as head coach at E.E. Smith from 1984-89 and later at Pine Forest from 1998-2006.

He was a coach in Cumberland County during a golden era of local high school football that included contemporaries like fellow Hall of Famers Douglas Byrd’s Bob Paroli, South View’s Randy Ledford and Seventy-First’s Bobby Poss.

Saffos made other coaching stops in the eastern half of the state at Jacksonville, Wilmington Hoggard and East Columbus.

While on the staff with Ray Durham at Jacksonville in 1982 Saffos helped guide the Cardinals to a state championship.

He was recognized three times as the Coach of the Year in the old Mid-South 4-A Conference along with being named Southeastern Regional Coach of the Year and the state Coach of the Year by N.C. Preps.

He also won a distinguished service award from Mid-South Sports.

His teams made multiple deep advances into the N.C. High School Athletic Association playoffs and he averaged seven wins per season during his career.

Frye served as an assistant football coach on the staff of Douglas Byrd coach and fellow Hall of Famer Bob Paroli. He went on to be an assistant at East Carolina, Florida, N.C. State and North Carolina.

He carved out his greatest success during a lengthy and outstanding career as the head women’s track coach at the University of South Carolina.

He guided the Gamecocks to the school’s first NCAA title in any sport as his women’s track team won the 2002 national championship.

He has coached some of the finest track athletes in NCAA and Olympic history. The list of names includes another Hall of Famer, Demetria Washington of Terry Sanford.

Of the approximately 200 athletes he coached while at South Carolina, all but one earned a degree from the school.

Frye also founded the Frye Foundation to increase awareness of diabetes and deal with mental illness in the African-American community. His foundation hosts diabetes benefit runs and fundraisers for nursing scholarships.

    Glenn Riddle

Riddle is thought to be the only Cumberland County native who officiated men’s basketball in the Atlantic Coast Conference.

In 1983, he officiated games involving both the NCAA men’s and women’s national championship teams that season, North Carolina State and Old Dominion respectively.

In 1986 he was chosen to officiate the NCAA 1-AA football championship playoffs at the regional level.

He also officiated the N.C. Coaches Association East-West All-Star game in Greensboro as well as state championship football games for the N.C. High School Athletic Association at the 1-A, 2-A, 3-A and 4-A levels.

He officiated with such greats as Lou Bello and Lenny Wirtz. Among the coaches and athletes he called the games of were Mike Krzyzewski, Dean Smith, Jim Valvano, David Thompson, Len Bias, Tommy Burleson, Jay Bilas, Clarence “Cornbread” Maxwell and Ralph Sampson.

He also officiated high school, college and American Legion baseball.

In addition, Riddle served as an assistant superintendent for both the Cumberland County and Lee County school systems.

    Bob McEvoy

McEvoy was a successful coach and athletic administrator.

He started out as the men’s basketball coach at Douglas Byrd High School where he took a program mired in losing and turned it into a state playoff qualifier.

Eventually he landed at then Methodist College as basketball coach where he served seven seasons. In 1996-97 Methodist was 22-8, setting a school record for wins, and advanced to the NCAA Elite Eight.

He was honored as National Association of Basketball Coaches South Region Coach of the Year.

In addition he was twice named conference Coach of the Year.

He became the Methodist athletic director and held the position for 25 years. During his tenure Methodist teams earned 15 NCAA national titles and placed in the top five 15 other times.

Methodist won the President’s Cup for overall athletic excellence five times, including three in a row from 2013-2016.

Since 1998, Methodist has won 100 league titles, more than any other conference member.

McEvoy served on numerous NCAA committees overseeing various sports and was tournament director for a number of NCAA regional and national championships.

Harris, a product of E.E. Smith High School and N.C. Central University, had a lengthy career as a coach at the collegiate and professional level.

He coached for a few years at the local high school level before moving up the ladder.

Harris coached at Duke and N.C. State before becoming became the first black coach on the staff of Louisiana State when he was hired by Bo Rein in 1979. Harris coached with Rein at N.C. State.

After leaving LSU, Harris coached at Notre Dame and Minnesota, then served as head coach at his alma mater N.C. Central for two seasons.

After that he moved to the NFL for the rest of his coaching career.

Over the years he was on the staff of the Denver Broncos, Oakland Raiders, Buffalo Bills, New York Jets and San Francisco 49ers.

Among his best players were future Pro Football Hall of Famer Curtis Martin of the New York Jets and San Francisco 49ers All-Pro Frank Gore.

A 1963 graduate of N.C. Central, Harris earned a master’s degree from Duke in 1972.

Bill to legalize online sports betting absent as Crossover Day approaches

Supporters of legalizing gambling in Georgia may have to wait until next year for the General Assembly to act.

With less than a week remaining before Crossover Day – the deadline for legislation to pass either the Georgia House or Senate to remain alive for the year – a constitutional amendment to legalize online sports betting a House member is planning to sponsor has yet to be introduced.

Meanwhile, a Senate committee voted down a second constitutional change Thursday aimed at bringing both sports betting and casinos to the Peach State, killing it for 2025.

Rejecting bids to legalize gambling in Georgia has become standard operating procedure in the General Assembly. While 38 states and the District of Columbia have sports betting in some form, efforts to get sports betting legalized in Georgia have fizzled for years.

A long-running legal dispute over whether a constitutional amendment is required to bring sports betting here has hampered legislative efforts in recent years. Lawmakers also have disagreed over how much to tax betting proceeds and whether to spend that money on Georgia’s lottery-funded HOPE Scholarships and pre-kindergarten programs, health care, economic development, or initiatives to reduce poverty in low-income areas.

A key talking point for supporters of sports betting is that it’s so pervasive around the country – including the neighboring states of Tennessee, North Carolina, and Florida – that Georgians are going elsewhere to place bets, depriving the state treasury of a lucrative revenue source.

“Tens of thousands of people are leaving Georgia every month to gamble,” Sen. Carden Summers, R-Cordele, who is sponsoring a constitutional amendment in the Senate aimed at legalizing both sports betting and casinos, told members of the Senate Regulated Industries Committee Thursday.

State Rep. Marcus Wiedower, R-Watkinsville, is planning to introduce a constitutional change into the House that would be limited to online sports betting.

“I don’t feel there’s an appetite for casinos or horse racing,” he said.

Wiedower sponsored legislation two years ago that would have legalized sports betting by statute rather than a constitutional amendment. But he said he’s going with a constitutional amendment this year.

“To avoid the legal argument, the only route to go is the constitutional amendment,” he said.

Summers said the advantage of seeking a constitutional amendment is that it would give Georgia voters a chance to decide the issue in a statewide referendum. He cited a straw poll among Republican primary voters last May that found more than 80% in favor of scheduling a statewide vote on whether to allow “gaming” in Georgia.

“This amendment does not force anyone to gamble,” Summers said. “It simply allows Georgia voters to have their say.”

Summers put a different twist on his proposal not featured in previous versions of legalized gambling: It calls for dividing the first $2 billion of the proceeds evenly among Georgia’s 159 counties. That way, the benefits from casinos wouldn’t just go to the communities where they’re located.

“This is real money that would help with infrastructure, economic development and essential services, especially in rural Georgia where they’re needed most,” he said. “Dispersing these funds evenly is the only fair way to do this.”

Portions of the proceeds from gambling in both Summers’ and Wiedower’s measures would go toward programs to help problem gamblers avoid becoming addicted.

Problem gamblers are among the consequences of legalizing sports betting and/or casinos representatives of religious groups have cited over the years in opposing gambling legislation.

Mike Griffin, public affairs representative for the Georgia Baptist Mission Board, said the “social costs” of legalized gambling outweigh the tax revenue the state would raise from bettors.

“Casinos increase human trafficking, drug trafficking, and other crimes,” added Paul Smith, executive director of the Christian public policy organization Citizen Impact.

Both Summers and Wiedower are pushing standalone constitutional amendments without the addition of separate “enabling” bills, usually longer pieces of legislation that spell out how either sports betting or casinos would operate in Georgia. They reason there’s no point in working to develop such detailed measures if voters defeat legalized gambling at the polls.

The Giants are reportedly one of the teams interested in Matthew Stafford, but in this mock draft, they miss out on the 37-year-old signal-caller. As a result, they pivot to the top of the draft, and with general manager Joe Schoen and head coach Brian Daboll badly needing to produce a successful season, they can’t afford to miss. That’s why they leave nothing to chance, moving up two spots and getting the quarterback they want, which in this case is Cam Ward.

The Myles Garrett trade rumors are swirling, but from the Browns perspective he’s not going anywhere, so Cleveland turns its attention to the other side of the ball. Head coach Kevin Stefanski spoke highly of both Cam Ward and Shedeur Sanders at the NFL combine, but in one specific interview, he pointed out that two quarterback traits he covets are accuracy and decision-making. Sanders doesn’t wow you with his athletic traits, but he certainly possesses those attributes, so that’s the direction Cleveland goes.

The biggest news to come out of the NFL combine so far has been the injury to Abdul Carter, who reportedly has a stress reaction in his right foot but will elect not to undergo surgery after having more tests done. CBS Sports NFL Draft analyst Ryan Wilson talked to two league sources who are “not worried” at all about Carter’s injury, so I’m not going to be, either. The Titans still take Carter in the top 3 to strengthen their pass rush, which will likely be without Harold Landry next season with Tennessee allowing him to seek a trade.

Patriots EVP Eliot Wolf emphasized needing to improve in the trenches during his NFL combine press conference, citing it as a formula for winning. And depending on how the first three picks shake out, offensive line and defensive line still seem like the most likely targets. But this is a dream scenario for New England; Travis Hunter can not only be Drake Maye’s No. 1 wide receiver but can help shore up the back end of Mike Vrabel’s defense.

The Jaguars finished 30th in the league in sack rate (5.5%) and and 27th in pressure rate (29.6%) a year ago, so they need to get better along the defensive front. And while I’m sure new head coach Liam Coen wouldn’t mind getting some added protection for Trevor Lawrence, Mason Graham is too good of a player to pass up here. His arm length isn’t that of a typical top-10 defensive tackle, but his tenacity, strength, technique and consistency more than make up for it.

With the top-two quarterbacks off the board, the Raiders and new head coach Pete Carroll focus their attention on stopping the signal-callers in their division. Will Johnson was one of the best NFL Draft prospects entering the 2024 season before being limited to six games this past fall due to a toe injury. Scouts were not able to see him work out out at the NFL combine, either, as he did not participate in on-field drills, instead opting to delay his long-awaited return until Michigan’s Pro Day on March 21. But make no mistake: Johnson is still an elite NFL Draft prospect, and new Jets head coach Aaron Glenn (a longtime NFL cornerback and defensive-focused coach) will get the most out of him.

Cameron Jordan turns 36 years old in July and Chase Young is set to hit free agency; that’s basically all you need to know about which direction the Saints should go in the NFL Draft. Full transparency: I initially had Marshall’s Mike Green here, but then Shemar Stewart absolutely destroyed the NFL combine. He had very similar height, weight, wingspan, vertical jump and broad jump numbers to Myles Garrett coming out of Texas A&M; the only issue is that Garrett had 32.5 sacks in college and Stewart only had 4.5. Even with Stewart’s lack of production, the Saints bet on his tremendous upside.

Credit to my colleague, Mike Renner, for pointing this out: is Jerry Jones just concerned about selling jerseys and tickets? Because his moves the past few years, including the hiring of new head coach Brian Schottenheimer, don’t reflect an owner/general manager solely focused on winning. Now, this is nothing against Ashton Jeanty; he’s a top-10 worthy prospect, so Dallas should be thrilled to get him here. But compared to almost every other prospect (not named Shedeur Sanders), Jeanty will get fans excited to go to games, buy merchandise and more.

Kelvin Banks was a decorated three-year starter at left tackle, but some feel he may be best suited for guard. Luckily for the Dolphins, they need help at both spots. They’ve long struggled to pick up tough yards when necessary, and that’s because of the lack of push up front. Then you have head coach Mike McDaniel saying Miami is preparing as if its current left tackle, Terron Armstead, is going to retire. Whenever Banks ends up playing, he’ll be a quality starter who will improve the unit as a whole.

The Ravens have a bunch of impending free agents along the offensive line, and Grey Zabel has played a bunch of different positions in his career (mostly left tackle at North Dakota State before moving inside during his breakout Senior Bowl performance). It would be a good problem to have for Baltimore, which could draft him and then figure out his best spot afterwards.

Obviously protecting Jayden Daniels is a priority, but Donovan Ezeiruaku’s NFL combine performance made him too good to pass up here. A consensus All-American and ACC Defensive Player of the Year (16.5 sacks and 21.0 tackles for loss), Ezeiruaku recorded the fastest three-cone and short-shuttle times among edge rushers. He gets to the quarterback and does so quickly, which will be imperative as the Commanders attempt to catch the Eagles.

I feel like I’m morally obligated to give the Chiefs an offensive lineman after what happened in the Super Bowl against the Eagles. Donovan Jackson moved from guard to left tackle after Josh Simmons went down in October, and he was an invaluable part of Ohio State’s run to winning the College Football Playoff national championship. Regardless of where he lines up, he’ll help give Patrick Mahomes more time to work his magic.

Apple Watches are hitting the ice in latest sports push

Apple (AAPL) is deepening its push into sports, adding its Apple Watch to the list of its products that can be found in and around major league teams.

The tech giant and the NHL announced on Friday that referees have been using the Apple Watch throughout the current season as a means of monitoring the game without having to take their eyes off of the action on the ice.

The new system includes an Apple Watch Series model or Apple Watch Ultra and a specialized app that provides the refs with data like the game clock, a countdown to the end of a period, and a notification letting them know when a player is coming out of the penalty box.

“Being able to provide the official the game clock on the wrist so [the referees aren’t] looking up, trying to find the scoreboard when [they’re] skating … was really important to make sure there’s focus on the ice and the players and the play,” said Andres de Corral, vice president of digital services at Presidio, the company behind the app.

To ensure the refs aren’t dependent on looking at their watches, Presidio’s app provides haptic feedback patterns that vibrate for end-of-period and penalty box alerts.

    “So notifying the official, ‘10 … 3, 2, 1, there’s a 200-pound person that’s about to exit a penalty box flying at you … Careful,’” Corral said.

But can it break up a fight? A referee wears an Apple Watch during an NHL game. (Image: Getty Images) · Getty Images

Each referee has their own NHL-issued Apple Watch. They can’t use their own personal watches while refereeing games. What’s more, the watches aren’t loaded with unnecessary apps and only get notifications from Presidio’s software. (You can’t have a referee getting Uber Eats while on the ice, after all. Or can you?)

David Lehanski, executive vice president of business development and innovation at NHL, said the league has been working with Apple on the Apple Watch initiative for years. The pair teamed up in the past, putting iPads on teams’ benches so players and coaches could watch replays of the game in real time to figure out how to change up strategies on the fly.

Other sports leagues also rely on Apple’s products, including MLB, which allows teams to use iPads in their dugouts so that players can get information on their latest at-bats and other game statistics. The World Surf League (WSL) also uses the Apple Watch, giving surfers information on waves and scores.

Of course, working with sports leagues isn’t just about helping out players and referees; it’s also a marketing exercise for all parties. Apple gets its products in front of sports fans, proving that they’re not only useful but, in the case of the NHL and WSL, durable enough to survive, say, taking an accidental hit from an enforcer fighting another player or being sloshed around in massive waves. And the leagues get to show off their tech savvy.

  • State Senate kills proposal to put sports betting on Georgia ballot

State Senate kills proposal to put sports betting on Georgia ballot

A Georgia Senate resolution to possibly put legalizing sports betting and casinos on the ballot died in committee on Thursday.

The vote came as experts say Georgia is missing out on hundreds of millions of dollars in potential tax revenue from legalization.

    What we know:

The State Senate’s Regulated Industries and Utilities Committee took up SR 131 on Thursday.

The measure would have legalized both online sports betting and casino gambling and taxed them at 20% if it was approved by voters during a November election.

Sponsor State Sen. Carden Summers says the measure would’ve divided up any tax revenue evenly among all of Georgia’s 159 counties.

But the committee overwhelmingly voted down the measure, making it yet another resolution to put the question of legalizing gambling on the ballot that fell short of the goal line.

    What they’re saying:

“I believe that was a victory because I saw Democrats and Republicans voting against this bill,” said Mike Griffin, the public affairs representative with the Georgia Baptist Mission Board.

Griffin and several other lobbyists who opposed the resolution spoke out against it during Thursday’s committee meeting.

Georgia Baptist Mission Board’s Mike Griffin (FOX 5)

They oppose any legalization of sports betting, casino gambling, or other forms of gambling for a variety of reasons, including a potential increase in gambling addiction rates.

“You think about the mental health issues that are related to it. You think about the increase in addiction. You think about how up to a third of addicted gamblers are going to consider committing suicide,” Griffin said.

According to gambling addiction support group Gambleaware, compulsive gamblers are six times more likely to have suicidal thoughts.

    The other side:

John Pappas is a senior advisor at Geocomply, who handles cybersecurity for major sports betting websites and enforces state boundaries for the sites.

He shared data with FOX 5 that shows how many people tried to bet online in Georgia during Superbowl weekend.

    A slide from Geocomply (Geocomply)

“We saw almost 14,500 active accounts in the State of Georgia. So these are people that could have been potential sports bettors. People who would have wanted to place a bet on a legal site, but couldn’t because they were in Georgia,” Pappas said.

Their data shows a 75% increase compared to 2024’s Superbowl weekend.

Pappas says they estimate if Georgia regulated sports betting it could be getting anywhere from $110-115 million annually in tax revenue.

Summers says that’s money that could help counties in Georgia, especially supporting rural areas with things like infrastructure.

“People have asked for the right to decide, and I’m adhering to the will of the people,” the senator said during the committee meeting.

He says it’s clear from polling on the most recent Republican primary ballot that Georgians want to vote on this issue.

“In 159 counties, 80% of the people voted in the Republican primary for question number six. They wanted the right to vote for removing the prohibition on gaming from the constitution in Georgia, which would allow casinos and sports betting, etc.” Summers said.

But Griffin and other gambling opponents worry people won’t consider those social costs if it gets on the ballot.

    What’s next:

Even though this resolution died on the committee room floor Thursday, there are other lawmakers on the House side of the legislature, like State Rep. Marcus Weidower, who plan to bring legislation this session to legalize at least sports betting.

That’s significant because some Senators who voted against SR 131 said they only did so because they didn’t believe it would get support in the House.

So a resolution from the House may garner more support.

But Griffin says they will oppose that as well.

The Source: Information for this story came from a meeting of the Georgia Senate Regulated Industries and Utilities Committee, Geocomply, interviews conducted by Fox 5 reporter Eric Mock, and previous Fox 5 Atlanta reports.

  • 4 Nations lit the lamp for NHL, but could it work in the NBA or MLB?

4 Nations lit the lamp for NHL, but could it work in the NBA or MLB?

The NHL scored big by going global to fight midseason doldrums, leaving North America’s other major pro sports leagues to ponder what they could do to re-energize their dreary all-star breaks.

Hockey’s top league spent its February All-Star break staging the 4 Nations Face-off, a seven-game competition featuring national teams of the United States, Canada, Sweden and Finland that was a wild success for hockey diehards and new followers of the sport.

Canada won the tournament with a thrilling overtime victory over the United States in a championship matchup that was watched by 16.1 million viewers in North America — 9.3 million in the United States and 6.3 million in Canada.

That made for the second-most watched hockey game in the past decade, trailing only Game 7 of last year’s Stanley Cup Final.

“It was just the best example of pent-up demand for some great international play on the big stage with the big guns,” said Lauren Anderson, director of the Warsaw Sports Business Center at the University of Oregon’s Lundquist College of Business.

So can other leagues stage their versions of hockey’s 4 Nations? Anderson is skeptical.

“I worry that everybody’s going to see the success of 4 Nations and everybody’s going to try and run to do something, and it’s not going to be special,” she said. “It’s not going to be high-quality.”

Fans and players alike criticized last week’s NBA All-Star weekend, and it showed in the ratings. The game drew only 4.7 million viewers, according to Front Office Sports, down 13% year over year. It was the second-lowest All-Star Game in the last 25 years.

ESPN NHL analyst P.K. Subban said much of that is based on the effort NBA players put into it.

4 Nations “was the most viewed game that we’ve had in years,” Subban said. “It’s because it’s not just based on the skill and talent. It’s based on the pride, honor, playing for the guy next to you. I got a question for the NBA players — what the hell are you playing for? What are you playing for?”

Fordham University professor Mark Conrad said he hopes other leagues can someday reformat their all-star games to something more compelling than their current products.

“Those [the NBA and pre-4 Nations NHL all-star games] are jokes, and the Pro Bowl is idiotic,” said Conrad, who teaches sports law at Fordham’s business school.

MLB already has World Baseball Classic

Baseball officials would suggest they don’t need to stage a midseason international tournament since they already have the World Baseball Classic, which brought the planet’s best to springtime competition in 2006, 2009, 2013, 2017 and 2023.

The next tournament will be in March 2025.

Organizers of 4 Nations benefited from having nearly all of the world’s best hockey players already here, punching the clock for North American employers, so a high-level midseason competition wasn’t hard to organize.

A baseball form of 4 Nations probably wouldn’t be able to include three-time WBC champion Japan or Korea, third- and second-place finishers in 2006 and 2009, with those players competing in domestic leagues in July.

The best U.S., Dominican and Venezuelan baseball players are under contract for MLB teams, so a 4 Nations-like competition could be held during the All-Star break, but only with Western Hemisphere teams.

Conrad and Anderson questioned whether games involving teams other than the 2017 champion Americans or the 2023 winning Japanese would be competitive enough to hold viewer interest.

“I don’t know about the competitive balance there’d be between the U.S., Canada, Dominican Republic and Venezuela,” Conrad said. “I think there’s a risk that you may get, like, 15-0 games.”

That would be in contrast to the 4 Nations tournament of close hockey games. Just one of the seven contests was a blowout — the rest were either one-goal games or two-goal games that included empty net scores.

4 Nations’ success “really has to do with how the league is built and the structure of the players,” Anderson said. “No league is built for this the way the NHL is, where you can have four teams that are equally strong and competitive.”

It’s also questionable whether MLB would want to play ball with its union to negotiate for a midseason international competition when an ugly labor battle is expected after the 2026 season.

“Of all of the all-star games out there, the baseball All-Star Game is considered the best,” Conrad said. “You still get reasonably good ratings and it’s not the joke that the NHL and NBA all-star games are. Those are jokes.”

Last season’s MLB All-Star Game drew 7.44 million viewers on Fox, up 6% year over year.

    Too much good hoops worldwide

The United States won its fifth consecutive basketball gold medal in Paris last summer, but it was no cakewalk.

The Americans had to rally from a 17-point deficit against Serbia in the semifinals before Steph Curry continued his heroics in a title-game victory over France.

While many of the best international players suit up for NBA clubs, most non-American elites are employed in Europe.

Of the 10 players who took part in Serbia’s bronze-medal-winning game over Germany, six are plying their trade in Europe this season. Of the 12 players who got minutes for France in the gold medal game against the United States, seven are playing this season in Europe.

Conrad, the Fordham professor, said there would be more upside to a midseason international basketball competition than a baseball version of it.

“Basketball is such an international game now, and baseball is not nearly as much,” he said.

Despite a logistical headache of bringing players from Greece, Turkey, Italy, Serbia and other corners of Europe for a potential midseason NBA-led international competition, Conrad said, it’s doable.

“That’d be hard. You’d have to find the time to do it,” he said. “But you know what, if the World Cup can change its schedule in the midst of the soccer schedule, which it did in Qatar, then it can be done. I think there’s a will to do it. It can be done for a very short, intense series. I think it’s very possible.”

Success of the NHL’s 4 Nations Face-Off was in stark contrast to the NBA All-Star Game, which some panned for its confusing format and unserious play.

Anderson argued that the weekend of non-game events plays a key role in pop culture that’s every bit as valuable as any on-the-floor action.

“The NBA All-Star Game, that event is about the influencers,” Anderson said. “It’s about entertainment. It’s about sponsors. It’s really about everything that’s going on around the weekend.”

The Pro Bowl is dead and gone

Football, of course, is a uniquely American sport, so international play isn’t a real option.

And given the brutal physical nature of football, adding an extra game that doesn’t lead to the Super Bowl is probably a nonstarter.

Player apathy and half-speed play finally forced the league to conclude it could no longer go on with the charade of a normal game. So since Feb. 5, 2023, the Pro Bowl has been a contact-free flag football game.

Conrad said he doesn’t believe there’d be much fan outcry if the NFL and the NBA just did away with their all-star game events all together.

“The Pro Bowl is idiotic, and they’re trying to come up with new ways and gimmicks,” Conrad said. “So it’d be easier to chuck them. I don’t think the world would be unhappy if you chucked them.”

Any football fan under the age of 60 would struggle to recall that the NFL once staged a third-place game, the Playoff Bowl, featuring the semifinal losers playing the weekend before the Super Bowl.

The Playoff Bowl “wasn’t meaningless, but it was almost meaningless,” said former Green Packers split end Boyd Dowler, a two-time Super Bowl champion who also played in two of those third-place games.

Legendary Packers coach Vince Lombardi hated the Playoff Bowl, once calling it “a hinky-dink football game, held in a hinky-dink town, played by hinky-dink players.”

The Playoff Bowl had no real hope for staying power if a man like Lombardi, who put winning over everything, didn’t put full commitment toward it.

“At the time, [Lombardi] probably cared [about winning the Playoff Bowl]. I’m sure he cared — but not very much,” Dowler, 87, recalled.

Meet Indianapolis Star sports reporter Dana Hunsinger Benbow

    play

It takes a staff of dedicated journalists to bring you the news from around Central Indiana. In this feature, the Indianapolis Star introduces readers to our newsroom staff — or, rather, we let them introduce themselves. Up this week is Dana Benbow.

    What’s your job title?

    Sports enterprise reporter

    When did you join IndyStar?

    June 1999

What’s your favorite part of your job?

I believe that every single person on this earth has a story that is worth being told if you just talk to them long enough, ask the right questions and listen. The scores, the stats, the yards rushed, the baskets scored, and the records broken are the backbone of any sports desk. But the athletes, coaches, trainers, scorekeepers, announcers, bleacher shiners, equipment managers, team statisticians and mascots are the lifeline of the games. I love telling the stories of people.

    Why journalism?

When I was taking college classes, the internet didn’t exist. Getting the scoop meant breaking news in the morning newspaper. I fell in love with the old black-and-white movies of newspaper presses rolling, and I loved when the foreman yelled “Stop the presses!” I was in awe of the hawkers on city streets selling those breaking news editions they called extras. Everything has changed in my 25 years in the business, but really, the heart of it hasn’t. We still break stories a lot — just in a different way. We still stop the presses when we update stories online. And we strive to give people that extra news they may not even know they needed until they read it.

What’s your favorite Indy area restaurant or hidden gem?

Restaurant? Incredible India and its delectable chicken tikka masala with garlic naan.

Hidden gem? The Indiana Medical History Museum, where you can explore the beginnings of psychiatric medical research. The museum is located on the grounds of what was formerly called the Central Indiana Hospital for the Insane, later renamed Central State Hospital. The heart of the museum is a building that is the oldest surviving pathology facility in the nation, which is on the National Register of Historic Places.

What do you do to unwind from a job that can be stressful?

Beach volleyball when it’s warm. (I have a beach volleyball court on my property with real sand brought into Indiana from a real beach.) Acrostic puzzles, a twist on traditional crosswords, when it’s cold.

What are you reading or streaming?

Anything I can find on Len Bias, a Maryland basketball superstar who was drafted No. 2 by the Boston Celtics on June 17, 1986, then died two days later of a cocaine overdose before he ever got to play a day of pro ball.

    What’s your favorite quote?

“Never give up. Never give in. And when the upper hand is ours, may we have the ability to handle the win with the dignity that we absorbed the loss.” — Doug Williams

Do you prefer dogs or cats?

Goats. I am the giddy owner of the fabulous Gus the Glorious Goat, a dwarf variety, and his much bigger brother Herman, who is the size of a small Clydesdale horse. But who am I kidding? I also have a handful of dogs and cats who are just as fabulous.

What’s something people would be surprised to learn about you?

Come and listen to a story ’bout a man named Jed. Poor mountaineer barely kept his family fed. Then one day he was shooting for some food. And up through the ground come a bubbling crude. (Oil that is, black gold, Texas tea).

“The Ballad of Jed Clampett,” the theme song to “The Beverly Hillbillies” was performed in part by my relative Lester Flatt of the famed bluegrass duo Flatt and Scruggs. Flatt was my great-grandma’s first cousin. So, he is my first cousin three times removed. The song rose to No. 1 on the U.S. Billboard Hot Country Singles in 1962-63.

What’s the meanest tweet ever directed at you?

Too many to count. But I once was covering the men’s Big Ten basketball tournament at then Bankers Life Fieldhouse. As we left press row after a game for press conferences with the teams, a competitor male sportswriter asked me: “So what fluff piece are you writing tonight?”

How did you earn your first dollar?

As a cashier and cook at McDonald’s in high school. That’s when we charged $4.59 for a Big Mac meal, and patrons had the option of “supersizing” their meals to extra-large fries and drinks.
